Artist Update - Andrea Corson

Although we tend to focus on niche designers and fashionistas flying under the radar, sometimes fashion shows and runways events can offer an glimpse into fresh design and style possibilities. Jewelry artist Andrea Corson was recently featured in the eclectic Subdivision Trunk and Fashion Show held at The Foundry in Long Island City, New York. Corson, educated as a sculpture, obtained her BFA at Syracuse University and went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her jewelry work perfectly showcases her fine arts training and has has enabled her to show in galleries from Texas to Vermont to New York City. The work features a conceptual base, drawing influence from animals, insects and the interstices of small forms and details. Her sculptural education is evident in both the process and the finished product.

Artist Update - Veleska Jewelry and American arts stories

Veleska Jewlery has graciously been hosting a monthly gallery opening for the First Friday Arts Event in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The gallery is the studio of Kathryn Pearce of Veleska Jewlery but on the first Friday of each month, she opens the space to the local artists and features painting, photography, and other work, with the goal of strengthening the local arts community. Over 90 gallery spaces exhibit during Lancaster's First Friday's event. A listing of March 2009 events can be found on the Lancaster Arts website.

Additionally, Katheryn Pearce is a member of the Pennslyvania Guild of Crafttsman . "The Guild is a non-profit arts organization for emerging and established craftspeople from throughout Pennsylvania and the country. The common thread betweenthem all is the joy they find from creating with their hands."

The Craft Guild and it's member work to tell the story behind the craft including, "experiences, inspiration, personality and hard-working lifestyle that defines a craft artist." This echoes the mission of Best American Arts. Much time and effort goes into the creation of beautiful arts works, creating a mystique and storyline much deeper than a price tag. This storied connection between artist & crafts and creation & collector is what we strive to create.

Jewelry Artist Emily Amey recently had 5 pieces featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. In the past few years, Emily has been featured in Instyle, Lucky, People and City Magazines. Handmade designs of silver and gold dominate her elegant style, while gracefully playing on nature and organic forms. Her work has appeared on fashion show runways, been touted by fashion editors and stylists, and worn by the likes of Gisele Bundchen. She has been getting a lot of attention recently for her beautiful new work she is producing.

The Boom is Over. Long Live the Art!

Recently the The New York Times ran a great article regarding the arts movement as it pertains to today's socio-economic climate. The Boom Is Over. Long Live the Art! (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/arts/design/15cott.html?_r=1&ref=arts) reflects on the sweep changes that affect the art world, and the country as a whole during times of upheaval, past and present. Galleries are closing and artists have to be more resourceful and efficient to continue creating work. As noted in the article, "This has happened more than once in the recent past. Art has changed as a result. And in every case it has been artists who have reshaped the game."

Through thick and thin, American artists and artisans will continue to be creative. Creating work and jobs, supporting families and friends, forming collectives and arts organizations. Previous periods of downtrodden and unemployment saw the creation of The National Endowment for the Arts, Manhattan's Soho Arts movement, the formation of New Wave Art, and many new, exciting ventures.

Feature : Quilting Artist Judy Rush

One of our newest artists, quilter Judy Rush is featured in a pair of videos discussing her quilting process and artistic history. This past summer, Judy was featured in the exhibition, Material Matters: Quiltmaking in the 21st Century at The Columbus Museum of Art. The exhibition challenged traditional idea of quiltmaking, exploring the innovative techniques, concepts, and styles in modern quilting. As always, Brenda Griffith of Siyeh Studio has been busy working AND maintaining her blog ( You go girl!) . Recently, she installed a beautiful backsplash panel in her own kitchen. America Thinking Green

As evident from our current front page, we have been focusing on the green and sustainable efforts of our artist community, supports, and partners. From GG2G's eco-friendly handbags to the recycled glass jewelry from Smart Glass, many of the artists we represent share our concern and devotion to the environment. Recently, we have worked with the Los Feliz Village Street Fair and provided support through their GREEN SCENE effort.
Today, I came across a blog post by another of our artists Brenda Griffith of Siyeh Studio. Brenda's blog about her life and art work can be found at http://glassincarnate.blogspot.com . I want to share with you an excerpt from her June 3rd, 2008 post entitled "The Greening of Siyeh Studio".

So yesterday I mentioned the greening of Siyeh Studio. I am very excited about where I am now in the process and that it matters to someone other than me--there is a growing number of galleries and other vendors who support green art. So how am I green? Think Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Reduce. I have a zero-waste process for my production work. For the Morceaux de Verre pieces there is no unused scrap, and the small amount of mixed frit left from each piece is reserved for another new series called Frittered. In addition to reducing my materials use, I limit my energy consumption as much as possible. I fire at night in the summer and cool with fans instead of air conditioning. I hope to have my schedule worked out enough to fire in the morning in the winter and use fans to move the heat from the kilns through the studio for secondary heating. My lighting is all fluorescent--even the front porch light bulbs are long-life fluorescent spirals. The attic has been finished off so I can have insulation blown in--further reducing the energy needed to heat and cool.

Reuse. The most exciting development in the studio is efficient water management. I took a class in making rain barrels last Saturday and came away with five--three for the studio and two for the house. Two of the studio ones are designated for grey water from the studio sink and lap grinder and the third is for the gutters (which I have to buy and get installed in the next couple of weeks). All the water is for the new landscaping I am putting in the front and back yards. I already use very little water in the studio, and being able to reuse everything but what goes down the toilet is going to be GREAT.

I go through a lot of sheet glass and many, many 5-lb jars of frit a week. The sheet glass comes packed between sheets of thick fibrous paper that are good for weed control in the garden, art materials for paper mache, drawing and painting for J and her school. The frit jars are #1 plastic and recyclable, but I am never short of people who want them for storing screws, nails, small toys, pasta, crafts--the list goes on. Whenever I have a sack full of empties I either give them to my carpenter Dan (who parcels them out to his friends and neighborhood handymen) or I take them to J's school and leave them in the conference room for the teachers and other parents.

Recycle. I have applied for my own studio recycling bin for all mixed paper, old magazines and diet coke cans. Cardboard boxes and fluorescent light bulbs require runs to two different drop-off locations. I got the addresses this morning and I think it'll be worth it to make a run every couple of months.

Father's Day History and Gift Ideas

In the United States, the first modern Father's Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mothers' Day, which had been celebrated for the first time two months prior in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Lucinda Moran and Passion Works Studio

Our newest artist, Lucinda Moran, has been creating jewelry with precious metals and stones for over 20 years. "Fascinated by objects of adornment that have personal meaning and an emotional tie to our lives", Moran looks within herself and her community for the inspiration and deeper meaning behind her work.

Over the past several years Lucinda has worked with the artist community at Passion Works Studio. Passion Works is a collaborative arts community in Athens. Ohio arts. "Housed within a vocational workshop for adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities, Passion Works Studio supports arts collaborations between artists with and without disabilities. The creative process at Passion Works places Passion Work Artists together with Resident and Visiting professional artists to create outstanding and beautiful works of art." From that exchange of ideas and talents came a unique line of jewelry inspired by the drawings and paintings of many Passion Works artists.

Lucinda is known for her "Protect this Woman" Bracelet. Made of sterling silver, 18 Kt, and 14 Kt gold, the bracelets are encrusted with 4 beautiful stones. The inside of bracelet being is stamped with the uplifting phrase "Protect This Woman".

Local Festivals - Los Feliz Village Street Fair

We are proud to bring you a new addition to the Explore the Arts section of Best American Arts : Local Festivals. We aim to support local arts and community festivals throughout the United States. By utilizing our online presence and working with artists we strengthen our communities and bring fine American art to everyone.

This month we would like to present the Los Feliz Village Street Fair.
The Street Fair takes place June 8th, from 11am - 8pm in Los Feliz Village, California. Artists, Vendors, and Community Organizations will have booths and events located on Vermont Ave, between Franklin and Hollywood Blvd.

The Green Scene will be a feature attraction at this years festival as environmentally friendly products, services and creations will be displayed along the fair route.

When talking with artists we often get to hear the back story or creative theory behind their creations. The following is the inspiration for a pair of Callahan McVay's vases. The "Elements of Gemini" as Callahan likes to refer to them.

The Elements of Gemini
"The inspiration for the Fire (Inferno) and Rain(Wave) came during a rough night aboard a fishing boat in the Bering Sea. I was on watch in the pilothouse, staring out into the blackness, when a rouge wave brought the boat up sharply and kept it rising, until we perched nose high on the very crest. In that brief moment, the rain clouds parted and the globules of water oozing across the windows caught the light of a million stars, burning like fierce diamonds in the dark universe. Orbs and vases flowed before me. Fire, Rain. Fire, Rain. I knew what to do when, or if, I ever got back to my studio. Then the bow dropped, the hull slammed into the water and the boat fell into the void. I did not see another star that night."

Glass artist Callahan McVay, from Whidbey Island in Northern Washington state, has been been garnering some noteworthy press over the past 6 months. Besides having his work grace the cover of the Whidbey Island Telecom phonebook for the previous year, Callahan was featured in an article by The Herald newspaper of Snohomish County, WA . Highlighting the yearly open studio tour on Whidbey Island, the article features photos of Callahan's studio and mentions his love of swing music! Callahan also has a 10min documentary and interview video that has recently hit the web. In the video you can watch Callahan work and hear him talk about the creative process, the art of glassblowing, and his own interesting life.

Here at Best American Arts, we love the work the blog Wear Palettes has done in exhibiting color palettes from around the globe. Not focusing on designers or logos, the colors become simply creations and connections we make every time we outfit out ourselves.
